Folksongs & Ballads by Tia Blake

Picture
Picture
Tia Blake's 1972 album Folksongs and Ballads was the soundtrack to my college experience and heavily influenced my current love of folk music in general. It's a collection of American, Irish, and English folksongs which the artist's haunting, melodic voice suit perfectly. I decided to depict a scene from the final song, "Polly Vaughn," on the cover, since it features such striking imagery in its story.
"He looked on the lake
A swan glided by
The sun slowly sank
In the grey of the sky
She'd her apron
Wrapped about her
And he took her for a swan
And it so, and alas
It was she, Polly Vaughn"

The illustration for this cover was completed in acrylics on a 12"x12" wood panel. It was arranged digitally in Adobe Illustrator using fonts Hoefler Text and Il Shake Fest by The Illinois Shakespeare Festival.
